Waco linemen signs early
WACO, Texas - Baylor has added local offensive lineman Troy Baker of Connally High School to its football program, head coach Art Briles announced Wednesday.
Baker, who will graduate early from Waco's Connally High School in December, has signed a financial aid contract and will enroll in Baylor for the spring 2010 semester and go through spring drills with the Bears.
"We're extremely excited and proud that Troy is going to be part of the Baylor family," Briles said. "Not only for his athletic skills, which are tremendous, but more importantly for the type of person he is. He's an exceptional student, and the type of guy who is a great teammate."
The 6-7, 285-pound Baker is listed as the nation's No. 35 ranked tackle by ESPN.com/Scouts, Inc. and 47th nationally by Rivals.com. He's rated the No. 89 recruit in Texas by Rivals.com and listed on the Fort Worth Star-Telegram State Top 100 list.
Baker, a three-year letterwinner and team captain as a junior and senior, played under head coaches Kevin Johnson and Steve Hoffman at Connally. He was a 2008 first-team All-District 19-3A selection as a junior and was a member of the Waco Tribune-Herald's Super Centex Football Team's as a sophomore and junior.
"Troy has a lot of passion for a player at a high level," Briles said. "He is certainly going to contribute to this program continuing to improve. It's also a great bonus to add a local player; it's good for Waco and it's good for his family and the people who respect Troy."
A National Honor Society member, Baker ranks fourth in his class at CHS and was named to the 2009 Rodgers Recruiting preseason All-Academic first team which honors the state's top student-athletes in football.
