Hokies in the picture for top end?
Offers continue to pile up for one of the Southeast's top prospects. The Hokies are one of many to have already pulled the trigger. What's the latest at this time?
"I was offered last week by Pittsburgh, Syracuse and Michigan State," Tampa (Fla.) Alonso defensive end Anthony Chickillo said. "I think that puts me at about 42 offers. It's been kind of crazy."
Has all the interest surprised the lineman?
"In a way, I worked real hard for it," he said. "But, I'd be happy with just one. I can only go to one school. I know I've gotta keep working hard."
With so many scholarships, Chickillo wants to get out and see some of these schools in time.
"I've been to all the Florida schools already," he said. "I plan to go out-of-state soon. This spring and summer I want to go to as many as I can. I'm going to visit Southern Cal, Notre Dame, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Virginia, Virginia Tech, LSU and Tennessee. Most of them are going to be over the summer.
"I think every school is about the same, but the people at every school are different. I want to have a real good relationship with my position coach and the strength and conditioning coach."
Of course, Chickillo has ties to Miami as both his father and grandfather played for the Hurricanes.
Do any schools stand out early on?
"I don't really have a favorite right now," he said. "Schools recruiting me really hard are Miami, Florida, Florida State, USC, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Tennessee, Iowa and Virginia Tech."
Chickillo went further about the Hokies.
"I've talked to Coach Gray a lot and I've been in touch with Coach Beamer," he said. "That's one of the schools I've wanted to visit. I just love the way they play defense and the history they have of playing good defense. They are such a good school and every chance I get, I watch Virginia Tech. I like the way they get after the quarterback, blitzing and the aggressiveness of the way they play. They play the way I like to."
