Owls Offer Athletic OT John Poehlmann
The Rice Owls have been targeting Brenham Offensive Tackle John Poehlmann as a potential offer candidate for months. After seeing him in person at their Junior Day, Owl coaches were further intrigued. What sealed the deal for them however was a visit to Brenham High School on Firday of last week.
On Monday, the Owls offered Poehlmann a scholarship. An elated Poehlmann told us about the offer late yesterday.
"Rice offered me a scholarship today. I'm real excited about it and was hoping that they would. I thought it might happen because when the coaches were here Friday they told Coach (Glen) West they liked what they saw. Coach (Craig) Naivar and Coach (John) Reagan were here to watch me in my athletics period qnd they were here for a while."
John told us more about his thoughts on the offer.
"We all went to dinner last night and talked about it. My mom is an educator so of course she loves it. You really can't go wrong with a degree from Rice, it opens a lot of doors after college. I think it's a great school and I'm very excited about the offer. I like the coaches there a lot. They're really easy to talk to and just seem like good people. Rice is really high on my list - it's a world class opportunity."
Poehlmann believes his specialized off-season work is one reason for the offer.
"I've worked really hard on flexibility since last season. I've done a lot of plyometric training and change of direction work in addition to our off-season strength and conditioning program. I think I've gotten a lot more flexible and my mobility is much better."
John plays Left Tackle for the Cubs, who advanced to the Division II 4A State Championship last fall, dropping the title game to Aledo.
He is the youngest of 4 brothers, named after the Gospels - Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John - and if genetics mean anything, Poehlmann has a chance to be really good at the next level. Older brother Luke Poehlmann is sophomore at Texas battling for a starting job for Mack Brown's Longhorns.
His dad and two other older brothers also played college football. But as is often the case, the youngest of the family may end up being the best of them all. He will no doubt be the 5th member of the family to play college football, and getting his first scholarship offer a couple weeks ago was a relief.
"Yes sir, it was a big load off my shoulders after the Colorado State offer came. With everyone in my family having played college football you don't want to be the only one who doesn't," John laughed.
At nearly 6-5 260, John regularly runs the 40 yard dash in less than 4.9 seconds; that and his nimble footwork makes him an ideal fit for zone run-blocking schemes. But needless to say with the agility of a Tight End, he's also coveted as a pass protecting Left Tackle - exactly where the Owls have him pegged.
Though he admits that Rice "is a place I could see myself going", Poehlmann isn't ready to end the recruiting process just yet.
"I'll go to some camps this summer and probably take some visits. I'm going to the Rice Camp for sure. I'll most likely make a decision in June."
