Gesell talks Iowa visit
Mike Gesell is a pretty quiet young man, but on Saturday afternoon as he sat with a couple of his AAU teammates in Kinnick Stadium, he kept hearing his name being chanted by a group of Iowa fans sitting behind him in the stands.
"It was pretty interesting," Gesell said, "There were some people about ten rows behind where we were sitting chanting, 'Woodbury, Gesell, and Paige
come to Iowa."
The Woodbury would be Adam Woodbury and the Paige would be Marcus Paige, who are both AAU teammates of Gesell, playing for the Iowa based Martin Brothers team. All three made an unofficial visit to Iowa this past weekend.
"It's always good to see those guys," Gesell said of his fellow Class of 2012 prospects. "We get along great and they are great teammates."
The day started for the South Sioux City, NE prep with a meeting with Iowa Head Coach Fran McCaffery, who talked about his plans for the guard who is ranked #116 in his class by Rivals.com.
"I sat down with Coach McCaffery and he told me that he would like me to be a leader and a guard that can play the one and the two. He talked to me about the new practice facility and we looked at that."
The Iowa coaches made their way out to South Sioux City High School this past Thursday, the first day that coaches could be out to watch open gyms. Iowa was joined by Creighton that evening. On Sunday evening Stanford and Utah both stopped by for a visit and Arizona State and Notre Dame are expected to be in very soon.
The Iowa visit was the first unofficial visit of the fall for Gesell, although he has been over to Creighton a few times to play pickup basketball. While no dates have been set, the combo guard prospect hopes to make a few more trips this fall.
"I think I am going to go to Notre Dame and probably Nebraska sometime. I want to go out and see some other schools, but it has been hard to find free time to do it so far," he said.
Gesell currently holds scholarship offers from: Iowa, Iowa State, Northern Iowa, Utah, Creighton, Nebraska, and Drake. Notre Dame has picked up their level of interest since the end of the July evaluation period.
