Tech offers JUCO cornerback
Texas Tech assistant coach Sonny Cumbie recently ventured west to see a couple of junior college targets in person, with one of those being Thatcher (Ariz.) Eastern Arizona J.C. cornerback Travell Dixon. That trip led to a visit from defensive coordinator Chad Glasgow and an offer from the Red Raiders followed.
"I got to talk with Coach Cumbie and their defensive coordinator Coach Glasgow. They seemed liked cool guys," Dixon said. "Coach Glasgow took time to really explain his plan for the defense. He thinks I could come in and make an impact early. They were both easy to talk to and seemed like guys I could get along with."
Dixon indicated that the Red Raiders entered the picture just a few weeks ago, and the opportunity to play early is something that they've touted heavily.
"I know they're needing some cornerback help. We've talked about that a lot," he said. "They've told me that I could come in and compete for a chance to play and make an impact right away."
Dixon listed Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona State, and North Carolina as the other programs he's been hearing from the most. At this point he has no plans for unofficial visits this summer, and he's not likely to begin deciding on official visits until closer to the fall.
"I don't have any unofficials planned right now. I'm going to wait until closer to the end of the summer to see who I might want to take an official visit with."
The 6-foot-2, 200-pound Miami (Fla.) native has drawn interest from both the southeast and southwest so far. It doesn't sound like location will end up being that much of a factor in his decision.
"I'm just looking over all my options right now and researching the schools who have shown me the most interest. It doesn't really matter where I end up playing as far as where it's located," Dixon said. "I just want to make sure it's the best fit for me."
Aside from Tech, Dixon currently holds offers from Alabama, Arizona, Arizona State, Arkansas, Florida State, North Carolina, and Utah.
