MIH: #7 Micah Hyde
Micah Hyde has the "it" quality when he is on the football field. When the ball happens to find him, he has that special ability to make big plays on defense, which included two interception returns for touchdowns. Hyde comes in at #8 on our Most Indispensable Hawkeyes for 2011 because he could play either corner or safety and he just might fit into Iowa's plans in the return game too.
MEASUREMENTS: 6-foot-1 and 185 pounds
THE NUMBERS: 82 tackles, including 58 solos, 4 interceptions, 7 pass breakup's, and 1 forced fumble
WHY HYDE MADE THE LIST
Some guys just have a knack for making plays, doing something with the ball when you have it and stepping up in big moments. Micah Hyde has that knack. If it's the pitch and run after Tyler Sash intercepted a pass against Michigan State or the interception and return for touchdown to give Iowa the lead in the 2010 Insight Bowl win over Missouri, Hyde just makes plays.
The biggest question for Hyde this season isn't if he will be starting again in 2011, but where will he be starting this season. After starting every game at cornerback last year, Hyde moved to safety this spring and appeared to do pretty well at the position. His older brother, Marcus, played safety for Michigan State last year, so the bloodlines are fairly strong for him at the position.
Will he stick at safety or move back to his old position at cornerback. That is yet to be decided and may depend on the health of sophomore Tanner Miller, who had offseason shoulder surgery and was held out of spring practice. Iowa will be pretty green at safety, so having a veteran hand, albeit one who has never started a game there, could be important. There is always the chance, and one that seems to be gaining some steam, that Hyde will return his cornerback position. Based on spring practice, it appears that guys like Greg Castillo and B.J. Lowery are coming along nicely, so that could impact the decision that has yet to be made by the Hawkeye coaching staff.
Hyde's value could also increase if he ends up being part of Iowa's return game. Based on a couple of outstanding interception returns, Hyde has that "it" quality in the open field and that's why he comes in at #8 on our Most Indispensable Hawkeyes list for 2011.
