You want athleticism? Shaw's your guy
Dallas (Texas) Roosevelt defensive end Dequone Shaw overwhelmed opponents in 2011 recording double digit sacks, over 100 tackles, and earning honorable mention 3A all-state.
Not bad, especially for a sophomore.
At 6-5, 200 pounds, Shaw has had no problem attracting attention. His size alone draws eyes his direction and once you throw in his athleticism, the interest only increases. Several schools received a first-hand view of Shaw's athleticism this spring, as he high jumped 6-4, ran a 39.66 in the 300m hurdles, and clocked a 50.04 in the quarter-mile.
College coaches like what they have seen. Interest has come from Baylor, Central Arkansas, New Mexico, Texas, Texas Tech, with Baylor currently at the top of his list and is one school he has been able to visit.
"I went to Baylor," Shaw said. "It was amazing just going to the school you want to be at
seeing all that stuff was amazing."
"It's just the popularity they have right now and the way they orchestrate their defense especially the defensive line. They just live in the backfield and play with heart."
Texas came by in the spring and has shown some interest, inviting the defensive standout to a summer camp, but he was unable to attend. Since then, Shaw has not had much communication from the Longhorns, but is interested in receiving more.
"That would be amazing too," Shaw said of hearing from Texas. "Then I would be in Texas, home. It would be just awesome. That's all I can say to sum it up."
He attended the Rivals.com Underclassmen Challenge on Sunday and also attended a Texas Tech camp. For now, Shaw is putting in work to prepare himself for next fall .
"I'm really working on getting bigger, maintaining my speed, and staying in the backfield like I usually do," Shaw said.
His numbers from last year are nice, but Shaw has his mind set on more for 2012.
"Last year I had one interception and this year I want two, last year I had one touchdown and this year I'm going for two, last year I had 107 tackles and this year I'm going for 214," Shaw said
In case you are wondering he had 14 sacks last fall, so it looks like he will be shooting for 28 as a junior. It looks like when he says he plans on staying in the opponent's backfield he means it.
Shaw is currently ranked No. 26 in the Lone Star Recruiting's 2014 Top 100.
