Cabarkapa talks commitment
Late last week, Central Michigan received some good news when Impact Academy (Fla.) post Milos Cabarkapa committed to the Chippewas. A native of Belgrade, Serbia, Cabarkapa has only been in the United States for three months and is still getting adjusted to the American style of basketball. While in Serbia, he played for Superfund on their junior team.
At 6-foot-11 and 215 pounds, he will provide a much needed big body in the post, and the chance to play early factored into his decision.
"On my visit, I just really liked the campus," added Cabarkapa. "The guys on the team were all really nice and I had a good time with them. And when I was looking at the roster, I noticed they didn't have a lot of big men, so I would have a chance to play my first year."
Similar to current Chippewas point guard Chris Fowler, Carbakapa will come to CMU as a freshman with four years to play despite playing at Impact Academy (Sarasota, FL). Born in 1993, he will arrive at in Mount Pleasant at 20 years old. And the Chippewas will need him to step in early, as they team lacks a true center.
"We weren't really talking about that much," added Carbakapa on if the coaches think he will play early. "But I know they need a big guy, so the chance will be there. I like to play in the post most of the time and I have good footwork, but I need to add strength so that is a bad thing about me. I can shoot pretty good, but I really don't take a lot of shots."
The Chippewas were in definite need of a big man in the 2013 class, and Cabarkapa certainly fits the bill. But it is fair to say that he is a pretty big unknown heading into the year, and unlike the Chippewas last import from Serbia in Marko Spica, he will arrive with little fanfare. CMU was one of only a few Division 1 schools who were in on Cabarkapa, and time will tell if they discovered a hidden gem.
