NAMEDROPPER: Five-man scheme goes awry
AUBURN | Ellis Johnson knew LSU's "22" personnel packages, which include two tight ends and two backs, would be difficult to repel with the Tigers' base fronts Saturday night.
Auburn's defensive coordinator needed more beef along the line of scrimmage. So he concocted a scheme involving five-man fronts designed to provide more brawn along the line of scrimmage. And he was able to make that a reality.
Still, it didn't work well.
"(We) just got whipped," Johnson said. "The base 4-2-5 was okay
on normal downs but your base would be conceding short yardage if we didn't get that extra body out there. It's a package we worked quite a bit, but our offense doesn't run anything like that. We really haven't run it against good people. We got caught off or feet and pushed back -- that was the biggest issue with it."
