Maples made his case on Saturday
Certainly, the biggest news from Tennessee's one-day senior camp was the commitment of running back/athlete Daryl Vereen, but that was not the only news of the day to come out of the Vols camp. The second biggest note of the day was the performance of Vol commitment Tyler Maples of Maryville, Tenn., High School.
Some wondered allowed about Tennessee's decision to offer Maples so early. Maples' coach George Quarles was even surprised the Vols offered early, but quickly pointed out back in March that Maples stock would soar after summer camps. Once Maples committed to Tennessee, he pulled out of any camps other then Saturday's day camp in Knoxville. And as his coach predicted, Maples did not disappoint.
"I just wanted to come out and compete and show the coaches that they did not make a mistake," Maples said. "I just wanted to show them where I stood and I wanted to help them recruit other guys. I spent a good bit of time with Chris Donald, Harrison Smith and Rod Davis."
