BOULDER, Colo. - On Sunday afternoon, the coaching staff decided it was time to make a decision in regards to the quarterback battle.
James Cox was fighting an uphill battle coming into preseason camp after missing most of spring ball with a thumb injury. But the senior quarterback proved to be the most consistent passer through the first two weeks of camp and on Sunday he was named the starting quarterback.
"We had an hour and a half break after our morning practice today and that's when Coach Helfrich called me up to his office and let me know the good news," Cox explained.
"It was really hard for me not to be able to practice during the spring. But I never doubted myself a minute. I knew I would just have to work twice as hard.
Junior Brian White led the quarterback battle early on during camp, but struggled in both scrimmages. Cox was not dominant in either scrimmage, but he did complete 14-of-29 passes for 198 yards without throwing an interception.
