This summer, Washington State senior defensive end Mkristo Bruce added a unique credential to his ever-growing resume.
Being named one of the Cougars four captains. It's an honor certainly, but it's not unique. Every football team in the country, from Pop Warner to the NFL, chooses someone to wear the C.
Inclusion on the 2006 Bronko Nagurski preseason watch list. It's a deserved sign of respect for a player who totaled 10 sacks and 15 tackles for loss. It places him among the elite, 55 players were chosen, but not the unique.
His mouth will stop when teams try to run up and down the field. Bruce has one of those reputations, the kind that make freshman tread lightly, for fear of getting tied to a goal post. He's a practical joker and a trash talker, a John Winger in a world people are supposed to act like soldiers.
"Our locker room is like standup comedy," Bruce said. "It's no holds barred."
Bruce mentioned junior offensive lineman Bobby Byrd, sophomore offensive lineman Derek Hunter and sophomore defensive tackle Fevaea'i Ahmu - his partner in crime - as the guys whose mouths motor like AM radio personalities, but if the locker room is like the stage, Bruce is the headliner.
