Fresh faces making big plays for CU
You don't practice, you don't play. That is one of the messages first-year Colorado head coach Dan Hawkins has tried to get across to his team since taking over.
On the flipside, the players that standout in practice have been given an opportunity to show what they can do on game day.
Redshirt freshman Jarrell Yates' 29 yard touchdown reception last Saturday against Texas Tech was his first reception at the college level and it came on his first play at receiver.
"First play, first route, first reception, first touchdown," Yates said.
"I can't even explain it. Right when they called my formation I knew it was coming to me because we had been working on that all week. Nothing was really going through my mind, I had no feeling. I just did it...it just happened.
"It really didn't hit me until a few hours after the game. I stopped and just went, 'I really scored my first touchdown'. I had missed calls, messages, text messages from friends, family from Texas calling. They were pretty excited and I was pretty happy about it."
