Midseason report card
With the midway point of 2006-07 season upon us, it's time to find out where Bill Self's Kansas Jayhawks currently stand. With lofty expectations from the start of the season, you could argue that KU is a little behind where most fans thought they would be. At 12-2, KU is poised for another 20-win season; however, the two losses have been ugly. With 17 regular season games remaining, Self will have his squad ready for NCAA tournament play.
Sports Illustrated covers, preseason polls, expert picks, it's as much of a distraction as it is flattering.
KU was picked as high as No. 1, and as low as No. 3 in most polls. With a team full of underclassman, so much positive publicity can have a negative effect on the mentality of a team hoping for big-time results.
While most players and coaches would deny that the extra publicity is a distraction, it would be hard to say that an early loss at home to Oral Roberts wasn't, at least in some way, a result of an overly confident basketball team.
After back-to-back opening round losses in the NCAA Tournament, Jayhawk fans became weary watching their team lose what was supposed to be an automatic victory.
