A&M has what it takes to run in March
As February slowly rolls by March continues to get closer, and the college basketball world is up in arms when looking ahead at the NCAA tournament. You're supposed to go game by game, and if you're a player or coach you're hopefully doing just that.
But as a fan it's our right to look ahead, and there are a few teams that are already poking their head out in front of the others when talking about national title contenders. There are still plenty of games left to play, but right now four teams are coming up big in pressure situations.
Florida is no surprise as the defending national champs are dispatching opponents in the tough SEC left and right. Wisconsin and Ohio State are beating up the Big Ten conference, but they are about to beat up on each other for Big Ten supremacy.
UCLA and North Carolina are certainly teams that can contend, but recent losses are dropping them down somewhat. The Bruins lost without point guard Darren Collison while UNC dropped a head-scratcher to North Carolina State. Both are still contenders, but right now they are falling a few notches.
Pittsburgh certainly had the stuff until it got destroyed by Louisville at home Monday night, and Kansas was also a top contender until the Jayhawks lost to the team that owns the fourth spot - Texas A&M.
Who in the world would have thought A&M would be in this position just three years into the Billy Gillispie era? They might not get a No. 1 seed, although they certainly should get a strong look at one. But when it comes to the tournament A&M has everything one could hope for to make a run at the Final Four and a national championship.
