Ground game should be a strength in 2007
Going into spring practices, the Buffaloes have depth issues at a number of positions. But running back is not one of them.
After leading the team in rushing yards the previous two seasons, Hugh Charles needs to have a strong spring and preseason camp if he is to retain the starting job.
Charles is still one of the top playmakers on the roster. He is speedy, shifty and pound-for-pound one of the strongest players on the team. But he found the end zone just one time last season.
JC transfer Thomas Perez and freshman Demetrius Sumler both developed a strong reputation on the practice fields last fall. And P.T. Gates, one of the Buffaloes' top rated signees from the 2007 class, is also expected to join the mix in August.
Perez, who is listed at 6-foot-1, 210-pounds, averaged 8.2 yards per carry as a sophomore at Compton Community College in 2005.
