Budding two-sport star
In these days of specialization in athletics, very few players make the decision to participate in two sports upon reaching college.
LSU has one rare individual who is going against the normal path. Jared Mitchell, a freshman from Westgate High School in New Iberia, appears ready to be a factor in both football and baseball for the Tigers.
There is no doubt that Mitchell has positively influenced the rebuilding LSU baseball program under first-year coach Paul Mainieri.
As the Tigers head to South Carolina for their Southeastern Conference-opening series Friday, Mitchell is the leading hitter at .325. He has stolen nine base sand driven home nine runs while starting every game in center field.
