NU Notes: Asante hopes to get a leg up this spring
No position battle on the defensive side of the ball has heated up more this past week than the one brewing between sophomores Larry Asante and Rickey Thenarse at strong safety.
Both players are new to the position and for Asante, one of the big reasons why he enrolled at Nebraska this semester was to try to win the starting strong safety job.
"The battle has just begun and it's not going to end until the end of fall camp," Asante said. "We aren't going to know who the starter is until the day before the first game, so we're just battling every day for the spot.
"It will go all the way down to the wire. It's going to be a good battle."
Getting to Lincoln a semester early has really helped Asante adjust to the overall speed of the game. While at Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College, Asante was considered one of the nation's best safety prospects.
Physically, he knows he has the ability to step on the field and play next season, but being here this spring should also really help him adjust to the mental aspect of Division I football.
