Spring Preview: Secondary young, not inexperienced
Kent State assistant coach Scott Booker has his work cut out for him this spring.
The third-year coach must replace half of his starting rotation while maintaining the level of play that has come to be expected out of the unit. Gone are safety Andre Kirkland and cornerback Usama Young; also out of eligibility are Gary Ham, Terrell Cheatham and Barry Drakeford.
"We definitely did have a veteran secondary last year," said Booker. "It was a blessing being my second year coaching to have those guys out there. It was not only great for me as a young coach, but it was great for the younger guys to see how to approach the game. Hopefully that will carry over to this upcoming year."
Back in 2007 is returning starters Jack Williams and Fritz Jacquez and Rico Murray, a player that has logged plenty of time on the field.
"We definitely are young, but we're not totally young," Booker said. "We have Jack Williams and Fritz, they both have played a lot of football. We also have Rico Murray. He started as a freshman and was honorable mention all-American in 2005. He didn't play as much because we had some seniors play last year, but we're going to be depending on him to step up and do some things."
