Buffs announce starting quarterback
BOULDER, Colo. - The Buffaloes officially named their starting quarterback following Sunday morning's practice, and as expected, it is Cody Hawkins.
"Just overall, his consistency," said quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich when asked why Cody Hawkins won the starting job over junior Nick Nelson. "Cody has been very consistent this fall. He makes almost every routine play. That is a big deal as a quarterback, just making every play that is there."
Helfrich met with the quarterbacks on Saturday evening to inform them of the decision.
"I am really excited that I get a chance to lead the Buffaloes, especially going in against Colorado State on September 1st," expressed Cody Hawkins. "But it is also a bummer to see a friend like Nick be disappointed. So I am excited but I am kind of bummed for Nick at the same time."
A redshirt freshman, Hawkins does not have any experience at the college level but he developed the reputation as a winner in high school by leading Bishop Kelly to two state championships.
