Spring ball has opportunity for running backs
Without a doubt the Bruins signed one of the best running back crops in the nation for the class of 2008. That reason alone makes this a very important spring for the running backs already on campus. They must use this time to show the new coaching staff that they shouldn't be passed up for any of the highly touted young players coming in.
Senior running back Khalil Bell was having a breakout season before tearing his ACL late in the season against Washington State. He would have been the odds on favorite, but the usual timeframe for an injury such as Bell's to return to 100 percent is about a year.
While nothing has been decided and there is no official word, but an educated guess would make Bell a red shirt candidate unless his healing process is faster than anticipated.
This spring camp will be huge for junior running back Christian Ramirez. He has to take advantage of this opportunity. If he does and he lives up to his potential Ramirez could be a key player this fall. He is an outstanding athlete who has played both safety and running back during his career, but thus far, Ramirez hasn't been able to really settle in and get any significant playing time despite his superior athleticism. If the light truly turns on for Ramirez he could end up being this season's version of Bell.
One can only wonder how much of an impact redshirt freshman Raymond Carter would have made if his knee didn't buckle the second day of training camp last August. The one thing the Bruins really lacked, outside of Brandon Breazell[/db], especially once all of their playmakers started going down was the homerun threat. Carter would have supplied that and if he comes all the way back from his injury, he could be the fastest player on the team. Carter will be available to do some individual work this spring, but not contact. He also has to take advantage of knowing the playbook and be 100 percent to go when training camp rolls around.
