Gas prices affect Tampa WR's recruiting

This was going to be a summer of travel for Anthony Williams.

Then gas prices kept soaring, up to and sometimes over the $4-per gallon mark. Suddenly the planned travels weren't affordable, and therefore not really possible.

The three-star wide receiver from Tampa (Chamberlain), Fla., spent his Saturday in Orlando at a 7-on-7 camp hosted by Central Florida. The Golden Knights have offered, as have Arkansas, Ole Miss, Troy, Rutgers, Indiana, Marshall and Ball State.

The 6-foot-2, 202-pounder, ranked No. 93 nationally among wide receivers by Rivals.com, had initially planned to accept an invitation to Ole Miss' invitation-only camp on July 26. However, skyrocketing gas prices have made that trip one that Williams simply can't afford.

"I just don't have any transportation up there," Williams said.

That doesn't mean the Rebels are out of the mix. Instead, Williams said he'll wait until September, when schools can begin bringing in prospects on paid official visits, before getting serious about his recruitment. Ole Miss figures to be one of the schools that land one of his five allotted official visits.

"Louisville has been e-mailing me," Williams said. "So has Florida and Illinois but I don't have a leader."

Williams said he hasn't been to any camps, though he does plan to spend an evening at a Florida camp on Friday. The Gators haven't offered, and Williams indicated that he doesn't expect Urban Meyer to come after him based on the tone of the communication he's gotten from Florida. Still, Williams isn't remotely worried.

"They're not the only school that isn't talking to me," Williams said. "There are a lot of schools that aren't doing much. I'll just take visits in the fall sometime."

In the meantime, Williams is working to improve his game. He already boasts a 4.5-second 40-yard dash. However, Williams is looking to get more dangerous in the eyes of opposing defensive backs.

"I want to improve my quickness," Williams said.
