When Nyshier Oliver verbally committed to Tennessee in June, the 5-foot-10, 170-pound athlete from Jersey City, N.J., thought he was done with the recruiting process. But second thoughts came quickly and reached a boiling point on Monday.

"I de-committed from them," said Oliver. "I just felt like I rushed the process and didn't take my time."

After the news broke of Oliver's de-commitment, Notre Dame wasted no time extending a scholarship offer.

"I talked to coach (Charlie) Weis (Tuesday) morning," Oliver said. "He just said he wanted me to be a part of the family. He said he faxed the offer to my coach and it should be at the school (Wednesday)."

Oliver, who said he's excited about his new offer, plays running back and defensive back at St. Peter's Prep. Notre Dame is recruiting him to play slot receiver.

"I just want to play whatever gets me on the field the fastest," he said.

Because Oliver has had little contact with the Notre Dame coaching staff - his discussion with Weis Tuesday was the first time he had talked to an Irish coach - he's planning to make an official visit to South Bend this fall.

"I'm looking to get out there for an official visit; I'm definitely going to go visit Notre Dame," he said. "I'm going to go to Michigan and make an official to Tennessee too."

Oliver said he hopes to make a final decision after his visits. He's considering Tennessee, Notre Dame, Michigan and Boston College.

On Thursday he'll travel with his teammates to New York where they'll take part in a preseason camp. Last fall St Peter's Prep finished 11-1, losing in the state championship game to Don Bosco Prep. Oliver hopes things are different this season, even though he rushed for more than 1,400 yards and scored 24 touchdowns as a junior.

"We're going to win the state championship," he said.
