Notebook: MSU prepares for 'tremendous challenge'
EAST LANSING - After his opening statement on Tuesday, Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio held up a small gold football that was given by Duffy Daugherty to his mentor Biggie Munn after Daugherty won the national championship in 1965.
"I wanted to bring it today because it brought me back and made it seem very special to me where I am at, where we are at, where we are all at in this program. This program has a very rich tradition. I got this when we dedicated the building last week. I just appreciate the giving, I guess. I am very humble to have that responsibility that goes along with this."
Dantonio's responsibility now is preparing his young Spartans for a California team that has a talent-filled roster and is as well-coached as any team in the Pac-10.
