In 2006 Malik James was a standout cornerback at Los Angeles (Calif.) Freemont. He had a few academic issues but that did not stop Pac-10 schools from pursuing his services.

He sat out the next season focusing on his academics, and then enrolled at L.A. Southwest. The future looked bright for James at Southwest but those plans were altered by a life changing event.
