Practice Notebook: Aggies head indoors
With the Aggies moving out of the dorms Thursday, Texas A&M moved practice to the afternoon with a single session inside the McFerrin Athletic Center. The Aggies worked a lot of goal line drills in the team sessions with the offense going into the end zone and also backed up against their own end zone.
In the end, it was the offense that ruled the day. Only once did the defense stop the offense from gaining a first down with their backs up against their own end zone, and twice the offense went for long touchdowns in that situation.
"I thought we had a lot of enthusiasm out here today. We had pads on. I thought there were certain drills the offense was better and certain drills the defense was better," said A&M head coach Mike Sherman. "Overall I thought the offense won today. They did better than the defense. We had some lulls here in the backed-up offense. We gave up two touchdowns with the ball on the minus-two yard line and you can't do that. We talk about when you pin them down here you have to keep them down here."
The first touchdown came when true freshman running back Christine Michael took a carry off tackle to the right and legged his way through a tackle, and then turned on the afterburners to beat cornerback Terrence Frederick and safety Jordan Pugh for a 93-yard touchdown down the right sideline.
The second touchdown came on a play-action pass in which junior quarterback Jerrod Johnson hit sophomore receiver Jeff Fuller in stride over the middle after Fuller beat Frederick and left Pugh behind, taking the pass for a 95-yard score.
"Christine Michael broke a long run and then we threw a touchdown pass to Fuller and I think we were backed up to the five-yard line that time, so you can't do that," Sherman said. "We didn't play good defense on those couple plays, so we fixed them in practice and moved forward. Overall, I thought it was a very physical practice."
