Hokies add Florida LB Ovens
Sarasota, Fla., Cardinal Mooney linebacker Hunter Ovens called the Virginia Tech coaches this morning to give them the good news. The 6-foot-2, 220-pounder gave his verbal pledge to Frank Beamer and company over offers from Florida, South Carolina, West Virginia, Iowa and more.
"He committed to Tech after practice around 10:30 this morning," his father, Robert Ovens said. "The coaches were very happy and excited for him. They actually mentioned him possibly redshirting next year since he wants to play baseball as a freshman, but we're going to have to consider it and see what will happen. I understand they have a numbers game going now."
What made Ovens finally select the Hokies?
"We've had the offer from them since sometime in March on an unofficial visit when coach Beamer gave it to us," he said. "I know Hunter really likes the coaches. Coach Beamer makes you feel like you're one of his kids and he's very comfortable to be around. Coach Wiles is like a stepfather. He's always on top of Hunter every way possible since he's started recruiting him. I think those things really caught his attention and I know it's been fun, but he's glad to have it over so he can enjoy his senior year."
