Mid-spring offensive report by position group
Arizona State's offense has been very impressive this spring, led by the improved play of quarterback Rudy Carpenter and a wide receivers group featurning Brandon Smith and Kyle Williams. Additionally, this could be the best offensive line and running back groups ASU has had in years. Here is a mid-spring status report.
The play of quarterback [db]Rudy Carpenter[/db] has been stellar this spring. Following a sophomore campaign that saw Carpenter struggle -- perhaps due in part to several unreported injuries -- and the ASU passing attack sputter, a new staff appears to have this area of the team back on track. Carpenter has no doubt been aided by the vast improvements of receivers [db]Brandon Smith[/db] and [db]Kyle Williams[/db], and the added continuity of working with all of the returning receivers that played a role late last season. More importantly than that though, Carpenter has been throwing the ball extremely well with good velocity and excellent accuracy and he's making consistently solid decisions at the position. ASU coach [db]Dennis Erickson[/db] has repeatedly pointed out what an impressive job Carpenter has done this spring.
