ASI Scrimmage Insider: Winner in round one?
Both quarterbacks pass round one (By Gene Williams, Warchant.com)
Offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Jimbo Fisher said last week that the scrimmages would serve as the final exams to determine which quarterback will be named the starter. The first exam took place Thursday night inside Doak Campbell Stadium and both quarterbacks received passing grades but neither could claim a clear victory.
Drew Weatherford, who spent most of the scrimmage with the first team offense against the second team defense, started out hot and finished 16-for-20 for 205 yards and 1 touchdown. Xavier Lee, who had a little tougher duty for most of the scrimmage with the second team offense versus the first team defense, completed 9-of-16 for 143 yards and 1 touchdown.
"I as pretty well pleased for the most part," Fisher said. "It wasn't as consistent as I would like but we made strides. We took it to the field a little bit more. When you come into the stadium it's different from that practice field."
Just as important as the impressive passing numbers, are that neither quarterback was responsible for a turnover. That fact did not go unnoticed by Jimbo Fisher or head coach Bobby Bowden.
"If we don't turn the ball over with the way we play defense we have a chance to win every ballgame," Fisher said.
"The thing I talked to them before we went out there was no turnovers, no turnovers, no turners," Bowden added. "So they didn't have any interceptions, that's what we're looking for. The first thing a quarterback has got to do is not get you beat. Don't get you beat. If they can do well, that's good. So that's a good starting point as far as that's concerned."
