Camp Grades: RBs
Entering fall camp it appeared that running back would be one of the more talented position groups for the Sun Devils in the 2007 season, and that has been confirmed in the last few weeks, even as several players in the group have missed action due to injury.
Even with Rudy Carpenter at quarterback -- a player who led the nation in passing efficiency as a redshirt freshman -- on the roster, senior running back Ryan Torain is considered the top star of the offense. And legitimately so.
After a so-so spring in which he fumbled the ball at a higher rate than expected and did not perform up to his potential, Torain dialed up the intensity and was consistently breathtaking in camp.
Coach Dennis Erickson knows exactly what he has in Torain, a "feature back" as he calls him, and as a result, he didn't see the need to play Torain a whole heck of a lot in the team's camp scrimmages.
