November 6, 2009 The Michigan hockey team fell to No. 1 Miami (Ohio) 3-1 Friday at Yost Ice Arena despite outshooting the RedHawks 28-13. Hear head coach Red Berenson's thoughts on the defeat here along with a recap ?Red Berenson Miami got on the board first, scoring off a mad scramble in front of the net at 3:42 of the first period. The RedHawks capitalized on a 4-on-3 power play three minutes later and took a 2-0 lead into the intermission. The second period belonged to the Wolverines, however, as U-M outshot MU 14-2 and controlled the puck for the majority of the 20 minutes. That led to numerous chances but all but one came up empty. Michigan failed to score on two breakaways, a penalty shot for junior defender Chad Langlais, while junior forwards Matt Rust and Carl Hagelin both had open nets and both hit the post. Freshman Chris Brown did put the puck in, pushing it across the goal line as it lay behind Miami netminder Cody Reichard for his fifth marker of the season. With the crowd at a frenzy to start the third period, however, the RedHawks took control when Brandon Smith's innocent wrister from the right faceoff circle trickled through U-M goalie Bryan Hogan's five-hole at 3:23. That goal deflated the crowd and seemed to take the Maize and Blue out of it too, though they would have a few chances late .. that they again could not capitalize on. |
