February 3, 2010A month ago, Lauderdale Lakes (Fla.) Boyd Anderson four-star defensive back Demar Dorsey was not listing Michigan among his teams under consideration. On Wednesday, however, the 6-1, 175-pound Sunshine State prospect faxed in his letter of intent to the Wolverines' coaching staff.
Dorsey surprised experts around the country by selecting the Wolverines over Florida State, USC and Florida. He had been committed to the Gators since October of his junior year, but the two parties parted ways just days before National Signing Day.
Michigan emerged as a contender for Dorsey in the final few weeks of his recruitment thanks to a strong push by the Wolverines' coaching staff and an official visit to Ann Arbor the weekend of Jan. 15. During that visit, Dorsey spent time with his cousin, Michigan freshman quarterback Denard Robinson.
"We had a great time up there and hung out a lot," Dorsey said. "He was showing me around the city and stuff like that. I was in his dorm room and he was telling me a little more about the academics and how Ms. Shari [Acho] looks out for them and helps them out."
Having Robinson already in Ann Arbor contributed to Dorsey's comfort level with the Wolverines. Michigan's academic reputation as well as their extensive alumni base also were factors Dorsey cited among his reasons for considering Michigan.
Early in Dorsey's recruitment, Rivals.com listed him as a cornerback prospect. Later they switched him to safety, and that is the position from which he made three solo tackles, forced a fumble and returned an interception for 45 yards in the UnderArmour All-American Game on Jan. 2.
Following the UnderArmour Game, Rivals.com named Dorsey the fastest prospect on either team (he has reportedly been timed in the 4.3 range for the 40-yard dash). He also received an honorable mention game ball for the Black Defense.
With the addition of Dorsey, Michigan now has 27 prospects signed in the class of 2010. Dorsey's letter of intent was expected to be the final one received by Michigan in this class. Head coach Rich Rodriguez will hold his Signing Day Press Conference at 3:00 ET on Wednesday afternoon.
