June 16, 2010When Mobile (Ala.) B.C. Rain defensive end Devaunte Sigler headed to Auburn last Sunday for a Senior Mini Camp, he had one goal in mind, secure an Auburn offer.
Sigler had already been evaluated by the Auburn coaches a few times, but the last step was for Sigler to come to camp and get coached up and perform.
That's what Sigler did.
He left the camp pretty sure he was headed for an Auburn offer, and it didn't take long for the good news to officially come.
"I got it when I was a couple of miles down the road," Sigler said. "That was the last day they needed to evaluate me, it was big."
Sigler is being recruited to Auburn by running backs coach Curtis Luper.
"He's a good person to just talk to," Sigler said about Luper.
Sigler projects as a defensive end in college and was coached at camp by one Auburn's greatest players, current defensive line coach Tracy Rocker.
"He's a good person," Sigler said. "He's not too hard on you, he just tells you to get it going and pick it up some. I learned a lot."
The 6-foot-4, 250-pound prospect said finally getting that Auburn offer may have been just as important for the school and other players as it was to him.
"It was big for me, but it was also big for people around the school," Sigler said. "When I got home from the camp, the next day we had practice and I had an Auburn hat on. They said you got an offer from Auburn, and they were proud of me. To have someone in their school with that much talent and heart."
Sigler admitted that playing instate would be important to him, and now lists the home state Tigers atop his list with another SEC Western division school.
"They are right at the top with Ole Miss," Sigler said. "I have gone to Auburn a couple of times already, and I just like being up there around the people. Everyone is just nice up there, I like being around a good environment.
"Those are two big SEC schools. It will be hard to choose between those. They both have good programs and good environments, and both are good places to get an education."
Sigler plans to make his decision during the season.
"I'll be making one during the season," Sigler said, "around the fifth game of the season."
The Mobile area player got his official offer from Auburn two days before another Mobile product committed to the Tigers, as Davidson defensive lineman JaBrian Niles committed to Auburn on Tuesday.
