August 7, 2002It is quite apparent that the UCLA Bruins are looking good at the quarterback position in the future.
Recently BruinBlitz was impressed by incoming freshman quarterback Matt Moore and after interviewing the other incoming freshman signal-caller Drew Olsen (6-3, 210, 4.65) from Piedmont, Calif., Bruinblitz is very impressed by the demeanor of both players.
Olson has been down at the UCLA campus all summer long immersing himself with the weight lifting program and getting himself ready for the season.
"I've been working out with Glenn Ohaeri, Marcedes Lewis and Matt Moore this summer," Olson said.
"I've been throwing at least three times a week as well as working out."
Olson comes with a pretty impressive resume. He works on his game with NoCal QB guru Roger Theder the former Cal Bear head coach.
Kyle Wright, Dennis Dixon and T.C. Ostrander, are just a few of the big time signal-callers who are being tutored by Theder in the northern California.
All three see the skills that Olson displays on a weekly basis and some feel his presence may be the reason UCLA is falling as a favorite by Wright and other NoCal field generals.
Now that is something to get excited about. If Olson is intimidating others that may have otherwise been interested in UCLA then that speaks volumes about Olson.
Is Olson going to be the next Cade and start as a true freshman?
"The staff haven't really talked to me about red shirting or not," Olson said. "Whether I red shirt or not, I'll know by the end of camp."
Why did Olson choose UCLA?
"I liked the atmosphere at UCLA, the people, the players, the coaching staff, I just felt comfortable with the whole situation at UCLA," Olson said.
Olson has an advanced grasp of the mechanics of the quarterback position. He considered an excellent decision maker.
Olson played out of a pro set so he has an advanced knowledge of the game.
Olson also has good bloodlines, his brother Eric Olson was a standout quarterback for Oakland (Calif.) Bishop O'Dowd and earned himself a scholarship with Boston College, before opting for a pro baseball career.
This is what BruinBlitz had to say about the talented Mr. Olson in our LOI wrap-up:
PrepStar magazine ranked Olson neck-to-neck with Moore in PrepStar's January issue. Olson was ranked the Western Region's #6 QB. Roger Theder thinks he's better than that. He compared his tools to a young John Elway.
QB Drew Olson (6-2, 190, 4.7) from Piedmont (CA) is the other true bluechip QB the Bruins signed this season. Drew's personal QB coach is former Cal Bear head coach Roger Theder, and he has been quoted as saying he has superstar skills. Last season, Drew threw for 1,850 yards and 20 TDs. Bruins land a Rivals four-star QB and our ranked #8 drop-back QB in the nation.
