September 11, 2011Obviously there are a lot of issues to be cleaned up before Texas, but Coach Rick Neuheisel said the most disappointing thing about the offense was their third down efficiency. They have to do a better job converting on third down and they will be working on that in practice.
Defensively, they still need to play faster, but on the positive side, the tackling was better and there were two very crucial turnovers that stopped San Jose State drives. Both were career first interceptions by Sean Westgate and the fast emerging, junior corner, Sheldon Price.
The Bruins did give some rushing yardage, but over 100 of those yards came on three plays and that was due because of players getting out of their gaps and missing their assignments. All are easy fixes.
The passing game should improve this week. Richard Brehaut was 12-23, but there were five passes that could have been completed that were plays missed. Also should be fixed with ease.
Kevin Prince was available, but they didn't play him, but there will be competition this week at practice.
Both quarterbacks are available and no starter for Texas is named.
Speaking of competition, Kai Maiava will not automatically get his starting job back. He will be competing with Greg Capella who did a good job. There will be competition all over the offensive line now that Jeff Baca is back.
Continuing on Baca, Neuheisel said he was terrific in first game back and his only drawback was his holding penalty and that was on his first play.
No worries about punter, Jeff Locke and thinks he will respond after his so-so outing against San Jose State.
The Bruins came out of the game pretty much unscathed injury wise. Only the usual bumps and bruises.
Glenn Love is expected back this week for Texas.
Neuheisel was asked if all the new coaching changes were reasons for some sloppiness and he answered there is no room for excuses.
