It was a common theme on tonight for Virginia Tech's season-opening, 20-17 win over Georgia Tech.
First, the defense, gashed a few times in the fourth quarter and allowing a 10-yard touchdown catch by Yellow Jackets wide receiver Deon Hill came through. After Georgia Tech quarterback Tevin Washington was flushed to his left and against the sideline, Hokies junior cornerback Kyle Fuller intercepted his wobbly throw in the end zone.
But most importantly, junior Cody Journell came through. After missing a 38-yard field goal wide left early in the fourth quarter, he hit the tying, 41-yard field goal as time expired in the fourth quarter. Then after Fuller's pick, he calmly kicked a 17-yard field goal to give Virginia Tech a big win to start the season.
After the game, publisher Jason Stamm and staff writer Roger Gonzalez recapped the game on Worsham Field.
