February 18, 2013For the first time this season, the Wolverines find themselves outside of the top five.
Since the Associated Press and USA Today released their preseason polls, the Wolverines have been ranked fifth or higher, reaching as high as No 1 in the AP poll in the 10th week of the season.
After suffering three losses in a four-game span (81 73 at Indiana, 65-62 at Wisconsin (OT) and 75-52 at Michigan State), the Wolverines dropped from fourth in the AP poll and fifth in the USA Today poll in week 15 to seventh in both week 16 polls.
The Wolverines are the last team in the AP preseason top five to drop out of the top five in the poll. Indiana has fallen as far as fifth before climbing back up (currently back at No. 1). Louisville has fallen as far as 12th (currently 10th). Kentucky has completely dropped out of the polls. And Ohio State has yo-yoed all season, currently sitting at 18th.
Big Ten foe Michigan State leapfrogged the Wolverines in the polls this week after defeating Michigan 75-52 in East Lansing.
The Spartans are fourth in the AP poll and fifth in the USA poll.
Also ahead of Michigan: No. 2 Miami, No. 3 Gonzaga, No. 5 Florida and No. 6 Duke.
