March 20, 2013Redshirt junior outside linebacker Jake Ryan suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during Tuesday's spring practice, according to a press release by the Michigan athletic department.
According to the team, Ryan is out indefinitely after the injury.
After an impressive redshirt freshman season in 2011, Ryan was a breakout star and one of the Wolverines' best defensive players last year.
As a redshirt sophomore, he led the team in tackles (88), tackles for loss (16) and sacks (4.5). He also forced an incredible four fumbles.
"You always hate when anyone gets injured, and unfortunately we've dealt with our share of injuries in the last 12 months," Michigan coach Brady Hoke said in a statement. "We will support Jake to make sure he has everything he needs to get through this. I know he will attack his rehabilitation just like he does everything else and will be back when he's ready."
Ryan was poised to be one of the Big Ten's best returning defensive players in 2013 - now, his immediate future is uncertain.
At his strongside outside linebacker spot - now coached by first-year linebackers coach Roy Manning - the Wolverines have a veteran in fifth-year senior Cam Gordon to take his spot.
Gordon has been having a strong spring, but he will now have to carry the load.
