March 27, 2013Michigan bound seniors Zak Irvin (6-7, Rivals.com's No. 34 senior nationally) of Fishers, Ind. Hamilton Southeastern and Mark Donnal (6-10, No. 107) of Whitehouse (Ohio) Anthony Wayne both enjoyed big senior years. Irvin and Southeastern were bounced in the first round by a very good Indianapolis North Central squad, while Donnal's Anthony Wayne squad made a deeper run.
Donnal averaged 18.5 points and 10.6 rebounds during the regular season for a 17-4 Generals team that won its first Northern Lakes League title in 15 years. Anthony Wayne reached the D-I regional semifinals before losing to Toledo Rogers, 68-62, a game in which Donnal missed seven minutes with foul trouble but scored 12 of his 19 points in the final quarter to trim a 12-point deficit to one. Rogers, though, hit five of their six free throws down the stretch to pull away.
Donnal earned first-team All-Ohio honors for his play this season. Season highlights (a dunkfest) below:
Irvin and Harper Woods (Mich.) Chandler Park Academy point guard (6-0, No. 47) and U-M signee Derrick Walton Jr. both earned Gatorade state players of the year for Michigan and Indiana, respectively.
"The winners were selected based on athletic production and impact in season," according to Gatorade. "Each winner also demonstrated high academic achievement and exemplary personal character, including volunteerism, sportsmanship and community leadership."
Walton finished second in Mr. Basketball voting to Flint's Monte Morris (Iowa State), though he garnered the most first place votes. He averaged 26.2 points, 10.1 assists and 7.7 rebounds in leading Chandler Park to the Class B regionals and holds a 3.5 grade-point average.
Irvin, a favorite for Indiana's Mr. Basketball award, averaged 24.6 points and nine rebounds. He carries a 3.38 grade-point average.
