U-M to receive $6 million for 2017 Cowboys Classic
The Michigan athletic department will receive a $6 million payday for the Wolverines' participation in the 2017 Cowboys Classic game against Florida, according to documents.
Detroit News reporter Angelique Chengelis first reported the figure, citing documents obtained through the Freedom Of Information Act.
The game will be played in Cowboys Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys, in Arlington, Texas Sept. 2, 2017. The Gators will receive the same amount for the game, and both schools will be paid by ESPN within 10 business days after the game.
This is a significant pay raise from the Wolverines' last appearance in the Cowboys Classic in 2012. That year, Michigan opened the season with a 41-14 loss to No. 1 Alabama and received $4.7 million for the game.
According to a Tweet from Detroit Free Press reporter Mark Snyder, the Wolverines are projected to make $6.1 million per home game in 2014, not including concessions, souvenirs, parking or premium seat donations.
The Palm Beach Post reports that each school will receive a minimum of 25,000 tickets to sell to fans and will not be on the hook for any unsold tickets beyond that number. A graphic obtained by The Post shows tickets will, tentatively, range from a $50 standing room only section to $350 premium seats.
Florida will be the "home" team for the neutral-site game, which means the Wolverines will wear white jerseys.
According to the contract between ESPN and the two schools, the network has the option to cancel the game, should one of the teams be charged major NCAA infractions after July 1, 2015 and before the game.
"If Florida is considered to have incurred one of these penalties after July 1, 2015, and ESPN elects to cancel the game, an FBS team will be secured to play in Gainesville on the date of the Cowboys Classic," reports The Post.
Alcohol will be served inside the stadium during the game.
