November 29, 2004DARRELLE REVIS NAMED FRESHMAN ALL-AMERICAN BY RIVALS
PITTSBURGH - University of Pittsburgh cornerback Darrelle Revis, whose fourth-quarter interception set the stage for the Panthers' game-winning drive versus West Virginia last week, has been named to the Rivals.com Freshman All-America Team.
Revis (Aliquippa, Pa./Aliquippa) was named a second team selection. He has compiled 41 tackles, 11 pass breakups and two interceptions in 10 games this year.
The 6-foot, 180-pound true frosh ranks third in the Big East with 1.30 passes defended per game. He ranks 22nd nationally in that category in the most recent NCAA defensive statistics report.
Revis has been an impact player from the onset of his debut season. He became the first true freshman to start in an opening game for Pittsburgh's defense since Shawntae Spencer, now of the San Francisco 49ers, accomplished the feat in 2000. Revis has started nine games overall and is earning consideration for this season's Big East Rookie of the Year award.
With its 16-13 victory over West Virginia last Thursday, Pittsburgh improved to 7-3 overall and claimed a share of the Big East title with a 4-2 mark. The Panthers, ranked as high as 19th this week, will look to clinch a Bowl Championship Series invitation with a victory at South Florida this Saturday, Dec. 4. The game will be nationally televised by ESPN2 at 11 a.m.
