There must be something in the water in Lake Oswego, Ore., because it seems like every year the high school program produces high quality prospect after high quality prospect. And this year is no exception as tight end/outside linebacker Gabe Miller is ranked by Rivals.com as the No. 1 player in the preseason Oregon top 15.
Last year Lake Oswego had two Division I signees and back in 2003 the school was home to two three-star prospects. In relation to the population and talent base in Oregon that's almost a monopoly at the school and with Miller around the domination likely will continue into this season.
"He has incredible versatility," Millers' coach and father, Gabe Sr., said. "Gabe could end up a bruising fullback type or an outside linebacker. The intriguing thing about Gabe is he is still growing and could end up as a defensive end or tight end in college.
"The possibilities are endless with him."
At No. 2 on the list is Beaverton, Ore., quarterback Kevin Riley. The 6-foot-2, 190-pounder is ranked just ahead of Tigard, Ore., offensive lineman Mau Nomani and Beaverton (Ore.) Westview quarterback Cody Kempt. Both Riley and Kempt have offers from Portland State. Nomani has offers from BYU and Oregon on his resume.
Rivals.com Western recruiting analyst Rick Kimbrel said outside of the top five or six players in the state this season it might be tough for another high-level blue-chip prospect to emerge.
"It's a decent year at the top with Gabe Miller up there," Kimbrel said. "I think a lot of people are also going to be also very impressed when they see more of Mau Nomani. He's a heck of a player."
Both Riley and Kempt also impressed this past weekend at the Eugene NIKE Training Camp. According to Rivals.com Western recruiting analyst Greg Biggins it looked like there wasn't much difference between the two quarterbacks.
"I think it's a race that could go on all season long," Biggins said. "Riley has probably looked the most impressive in several other summer camps, but Kempt also brings a lot of positives to the table.
