September 6, 2005Georgia running backs Thomas Brown and Danny Ware have been selected as candidates for the Doak Walker Award, according to an announcement by the SMU Athletic Forum.
The award is presented annually to nation?s top college running back.
Brown, a sophomore from Tucker, Ga., led the Bulldogs in rushing in 2004 with 172 carries for 875 yards and eight touchdowns. His 875 yards on the ground were the third-most ever by a Bulldog freshman behind only Herschel Walker (1,616 in 1980) and Rodney Hampton (890 in 1987). He tallied eight carries for 42 yards in the Bulldogs? 48-13 win over Boise State this past Saturday.
Ware finished second on the team with 724 yards and four touchdowns in 2004. He notched four 100-yard games and became the first freshman running back to start at Georgia in a season-opener since 1943. The sophomore from Rockmart, Ga., was selected to the SEC Coaches All-SEC Freshman team following the conclusion of the 2004 season. He tallied four carries for 17 yards and caught a 20-yard touchdown against Boise State.
The SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will select the semifinalists on Nov. 17, and the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee will vote to determine the finalists on Nov. 18. The committee will cast a second vote on Nov. 28 to determine the recipient. The National Selection Committee consists of former NFL All-Pro and college All-America running backs, media members and selected special representatives.

Awards on Thursday, Dec. 8. The Doak Walker Award Presentation Banquet will
be held at The Wyndham Anatole Hotel in Dallas, Texas, on Monday, Feb. 27,
