February 7, 2006Michigan's crop of 2006 and 2007 commitments and signees has fared well on the court in recent weeks. Detroit Pershing's DeShawn Sims, has led the way, averaging approximately 23 points and 13.5 rebounds per game for Pershing (12-3) so far this season, while the others have also been putting up big numbers.
Senior signee Sims scored 24 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in a 57-48 win at Detroit Southeastern Feb. 3, added 17 points and 15 rebounds in a 50-43 win over Detroit Finney Jan. 31 and recorded 26 points and 12 caroms in a 72-37 win at Detroit Denby Jan. 24.
In Grand Blanc, senior signee K'len Morris has had to pick up the scoring load due to unforeseen transfers but has responded well. The combo guard is now averaging 22.2 points per game after scoring 25 points in a little more than three quarters of work to lead Grand Blanc to a 57-38 win at Davison Jan. 31. Morris made five of his seven three-point attempts, his only two misses coming on desperation shots to end quarters.
"My coaches want me to shoot a little bit more," he told the Flint Journal. "I know going into every game I'm going to shoot between 14 and 20 shots a game. That's my role on the team. I've got to shoot like that every game."
Morris was 10-for-16 from the floor, and his five triples were the most he's made in one game during his illustrious career. He also scored 20 and grabbed a key steal in a 63-60 win over Flushing Jan. 27 and led a 56-35 win over Flint Carman-Ainsworth Jan. 24 with 13 second-half points on his way to 17, despite missing seven minutes in the first half due to foul trouble.
Senior commitment Anthony Wright of Oak Hill Academy, meanwhile, continues to average around nine points and six rebounds per game. He scored 15, including one triple, in Oak Hill's 92-52 win over Franklin County High Jan. 18.
To the class of 2007, where U-M commitment Alex Legion continues to play well. Legion scored 23 points in 8-3 Country Day's 55-52 loss to Detroit Community Feb. 3. Finally, East Grand Rapids (Mich.) standout point guard Kelvin Grady, who committed to U-M at the end of January, is on a tear.
