August 18, 2006University of Louisville senior guard Brandon Jenkins will be sidelined at least three months after suffering a broken right leg and high ankle sprain in a pickup game Friday afternoon. X-rays taken on Jenkins at Jewish Hospital confirmed that he fractured his fibula and suffered a Grade 3 high ankle sprain.
"We are hoping Brandon makes a full recovery soon," said U of L Coach Rick Pitino. "We will closely watch his progress and if he is not healthy within three months, we will strongly consider redshirting him this season. We don't want to go through a similar situation that Juan Palacios faced last season in playing on one leg."
Palacios, a 6-8 junior forward for the Cardinals, suffered a devastating foot injury last summer and was not at full strength during most of last season.
A 6-3 guard from Detroit, Jenkins started every game for the Cardinals last season while averaging 11.2 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.9 assists. A defensive standout, he led the team with 54 steals and was second with 48 three-point goals.
Jenkins blossomed as a junior when he scored in double figures on 21 occasions after reaching that mark three times in his previous two seasons combined.
U of L will begin practice Aug. 23 in preparation for three exhibition games in Ottawa, Canada on Sept. 2-4.
The Cardinals will play at Carleton University on Sept. 2 at 8 p.m., at the University of Ottawa on Sept. 3 at 1 p.m., and against Laurentian University on Sept. 4 at 11 a.m., a game that will be played at Carleton.
The first two games will be broadcast live on WHAS Radio (840 AM in Louisville), with the Sept. 4 game airing live on WKRD Radio (Cards Radio 790 AM in Louisville).
