The Detroit News reports that New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton has been contacted about the Michigan job. Payton has Midwest ties, having served as Miami (Ohio) offensive coordinator (1994-95) and quarterbacks coach at Illinois (1996). He was raised near Chicago, Ill.

Payton was named the AP NFL Coach of the Year in 2006 after leading the Saints to a 10-6 record in the NFC South and an appearance in the NFC title game (a 39-14 loss to the Chicago Bears).

In an update with the Times-Picayune, he denied interest in the Michigan job, though he remains on the Wolverines wish list.
