January 5, 2008Michigan has picked up its 17th commitment for the class of 2008, adding New Brunswick (N.J.) star safety Brandon Smith. A top priority for the Wolverines for some time, he maintained an interest throughout the coaching change, and declared his intentions on national television at the Army All-American Bowl.
"Next year, I'll be a Wolverine baby," he stated, expanding on the effect the coaching change had on his interest. "We've got a great head coach in Rich Rodriguez. I'm not worried about the coaching change at all."
Standing in at 6-3, 210 pounds, Smith also plays quarterback for his high school team, a position where some schools have also pursued him. However, he has stated a desire to play on the defensive side of the ball in college, which fits well with the Wolverines needs, given the departure of senior safeties Jamar Adams and Brandent Englemon.
A member of the Rivals250, Smith is rated as the No. 119 prospect overall, and is considered the No. 12 Athlete prospect. Stay tuned to TheWolverine.com in the days ahead for much more coverage of his commitment, including exclusive video highlights from his senior year of play.
