February 9, 2008The Trojans have opened up the 2009 recruiting season the same way the closed 2008.
With eight junior commitments locked down, Rivals Five-Star Academy kicked off with news that USC was in line for commitment No. 9. Compton (Calif.) four-star junior safety Chris Metcalf brought a halt to the recruiting process by announcing his pledge to USC today.
Metcalf, a 6-foot-2, 195-pound linebacker who projects as a safety in college, became the Trojans seventh Rivals100 commitment for 2009. After his unofficial visit to USC last weekend, Metcalf was sold on Cardinal and Gold.
"I'm a commit," said Metcalf as he arrived on the campus of Servite High School for Rivals annual Junior Day event. "My coach has to call Pete Carroll to let him know it's official, but I'm ready for USC.
"Just going down there last weekend - I felt like it was the right place for me. I love the coaches, and I love how hype everything is. Things move fast at USC, and I like that. Everything is about competing and getting better.
"I wasn't sure if they'd offer at first, but I was leaning toward committing if they did. Everything just worked out, so I'm a Trojan."
Metcalf almost committed to USC last weekend, but wanted to lay low in order to think his decision over before going public with an announcement.
"Everybody was just calling me and calling me," laughed Metcalf. "I went to my dad's house and needed time to think. I watched Datone (Jones) sign this week, so I could just see how it was. It kind of sunk in after that."
Metcalf arrived at Servite today with his cousin and Compton teammate, Justin Brown. Both visited USC last weekend, and have expressed interest in playing together in college.
"I know it'll come," said Brown of a USC scholarship offer. "I'm just going to keep working hard and prove to people that I'm a big time player. I was the only defensive tackle at USC last weekend, so I spent a lot of time with their coaching staff.
"They didn't really talk about an offer, but I know it'll come. We'll see what happens, but it would be cool (Chris) and I to play together."
As a junior, Metcalf had 56 tackles - earning All Moore League honors. He is currently ranked No. 100 in the Rivals 2009 top 100.
