January 22, 2009Penn State continued to reap the benefits of its big recruiting weekend on Monday evening, as Olney (Md.) Our Lady of Good Counsel cornerback Mike Wallace made a verbal commitment to the Nittany Lions just days after receiving a scholarship offer.
"Here on our end, that's what the football coach told me last night that he has committed to Penn State," Good Counsel assistant athletic director Mark Jankovitz said on Tuesday morning.
Wallace was unavailable for comment.
The 5-foot-10, 185-pound athlete was one of 11 official visitors who made the trip to Penn State over the weekend, and he became the fourth prospect to make a commitment to the Nittany Lions since Friday, joining New Jersey wide receiver Shawney Kersey, Buffalo lineman John Urschel and Class of 2010 quarterback Paul Jones.
The two-star prospect was a Washington Post all-Metro honorable mention selection following the 2008 season, when he recorded four interceptions. He was also selected to play in the inaugural Maryland Crab Bowl.
Before making his decision, he held offers from New Mexico, Stanford, Army, New Hampshire and Towson, and had interest from Cincinnati, Connecticut, Michigan State and Vanderbilt.
He was recruited for the Nittany Lions by defensive line coach Larry Johnson, Sr., who stopped by Good Counsel on Wednesday. He is also the teammate and best friend of five-star linebacker Jelani Jenkins.
BWI will follow up with Wallace and Good Counsel head coach Bob Milloy today for more details.
