June 29, 2009 Michigan basketball fans heard knee injury and incoming freshman Jordan Morgan in the same sentence and immediately thought the worst. The news isn't the best for the 6-8, 245-pounder out of Detroit, but it isn't the doomsday scenario for his rookie season that is might have been.Morgan was spotted on crutches Saturday at Michigan's team camp. Some checking confirmed that the injury did in fact involve his knee, leading to concerns that he could be missing from the court for as much as half a year, possibly even causing him to redshirt as a freshman. Michigan officials, though, clarified the situation late Friday afternoon. Morgan needs surgery on his left knee to repair articular cartilage and will be out four to five months for recovery and rehabilitation, according to a release. Dr. Jon K. Sekiya is scheduled to perform the surgery on Wednesday, July 1, at the University of Michigan Medical Center. U-M coach John Beilein sounded a note of regret that Morgan's progress had encountered the setback. "The timing of Jordan's injury is very unfortunate," Beilein said. "We are very confident, however, that with the great medical staff at the University of Michigan, Jordan will make a full and speedy recovery." Morgan averaged 13 points and 10 rebounds per game as a junior with Detroit Jesuit, but bumped those numbers up considerably in his senior season. He averaged 20 points and 14 rebounds per contest, claiming third-team all-state honors. |
